Dr. Goradia among first in U.S. to receive Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine
The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery developed the new CAQ in sports medicine beginning in 2007. Board-certified orthopedic surgeons are eligible to apply for this added certificate. To qualify, board-certified orthopedic surgeons must send a list of all surgeries performed over a period of 6 months. These are evaluated by the Board. If accepted, the candidate is required to sit for a 200 question written examination. This exam was given for the first time in November 2007. Dr. Goradia took and passed the exam. Beginning in 2011 surgeons interested in receiving the CAQ will have an added requirement of having completed advanced fellowship training in sports medicine. Until then, surgeons without this additional training are still eligible to sit for the exam. Fortunately, Dr. Goradia did complete his fellowship at Union Memorial Sports Medicine Clinic in Baltimore in 1999.

New Technique: "No Incision ACL Reconstruction"
Dr. Goradia is the first surgeon in Virginia and one of a handful in the U.S. performing a new technique for reconstruction of the torn ACL knee ligament. This procedure is done with just three small puncture wounds under arthroscopic guidance. Even better, the procedure is believed to improve the repair of the new ACL, reduce pain and swelling, and speed overall recovery. Dr. Goradia has been working closely with the company that has developed this technique and is now actually helping the company teach the technique to their representatives. Dr. Goradia has also been asked to teach the surgery to orthopedic surgeons from the U.S. and Europe in the spring of 2007.
Evaluation of methods to reduce pain and swelling after Surgery
Go Orthopedics is working with a company to determine the benefits of an ice wrap that circulates cold water and provides intermittent compression to the joint after surgery. The evaluation is comparing the compressive ice wrap with regular ice bags. The research has been accepted for presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Arthroscopy Association of North America for 2007. The final manuscript is being prepared for submission. Initial data shows that the compressive ice wrap improves mobility of the knee during the first 4 weeks after surgery. We believe early mobility can result in faster overall recovery.
The use of Continuous Passive Motion (CPM) after Rotator Cuff Surgery
Go Orthopedics has been using CPM for shoulder surgery and has found excellent early results in terms of reducing stiffness. CPM is a machine/chair that is delivered to the patients' home. The patient sits in the chair and the machine moves the shoulder. This has demonstrated promising benefits to patients including reduced stiffness and faster return to activity. Unfortunately not all insurance companies will pay for this machine. Dr. Goradia is discussing the CPM benefits with several companies.
