Why are we on the sidelines?
If you see some extra people on the sidelines at some local high school football games, do not be alarmed. Some of the Go Orthopedics staff will be covering local high school football games this season. Ashley Blackman VATL, ATC is the full time certified athletic trainer for Hopewell High School. She will be at all home and away varsity games and all home junior varsity games. Dr. Goradia and Jonny Wood, PA-C, ATC will also be covering some of the football games.
Between the three of them, you can see them on the sidelines at Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, Hopewell and Prince George football games. They are there to take care of any injuries or medical emergencies that may occur on the football field. Having the appropriate medical staff at high school football games is important so any injuries can be taken care of in a timely manner. Good luck to all the teams this season!

| Can I keep playing? |
|
|
As football season begins, it is very common for me to see injured athletes on the field and in our office. Although football has one of the highest injury rates of any sport, fortunately most of the injuries are minor sprains and strains. Naturally one of the most common questions I receive from the injured athelte is, "When can I return to playing"? As a sports medicine specialists, my first goal is to make sure the athelte is treated as soon as possible after the injury occurs. I make every attempt to get them back on the field quickly when it is SAFE to do so.
My philosophy is to treat every athlete and their situation individually. For example, when you go to the emergency room for a sprained abnkle, they will often automatically tell you to stay out for two weeks. Every sprain is not the same. Sometimes we can tape the ankle and get you back in the game within days. Other times unfortunatley a sprain can be as bad as a break and may take a much longer time to get back on the field. Your sport, your position, and the specific injury are all important factors I consider when recommending the best treatment for you to get back as soon as safely possible.
Hopefully everyone will have an injury free season but if you are injured don't hesitate to call.
