Meniscus Tears
KneeMeniscus Cartilage:
The meniscus is a soft, "rubbery", shocking absorbing cartilage disk between the thigh bone (femur) and the leg bone (tibia). There is a medial (inner) and lateral (outer) meniscus in each knee.

Meniscus Tears:
Meniscus tears are very common injuries that occur from twisting, squatting or hyperextension of the knee. Meniscus tears can occur alone or in combination with ligament injuries. As one ages, the meniscus loses water content and becomes less "rubbery" and can tear with little effort.
Meniscus tears usually cause swelling, catching, giving-way and pain. Unfortunately most meniscus tears do not heal and are likely to get large in size with activity. Medications and injections can help to alleviate pain while arthroscopic surgery is needed to remove or repair the torn meniscus.

Will the meniscus tear heal?

Most tears do not heal without surgical treatment. However, some small tears or incomplete tears may stop hurting and not require surgery in the short-term. Repeat injury could cause the tear to become larger and ultimately require surgery.

What type of surgery is needed?
Meniscal tears can be treated with arthroscopic surgery through two small skin punctures. Most tears are in the inner 2/3 of the meniscus- they have no blood supply and thus no potential for healing. These tears require excision of the torn segment.  Tears in the outer 1/3 have healing potential and can be repaired.

Will all of my symptoms go away after surgery?
If you have an isolated meniscal tear, the arthroscopic procedure should relieve your symptoms. The advantage of arthroscopy is that everything else in the knee can also be examined. If there is damage to the articular cartilage, the symptoms associated with this damage may improve after surgery but will not go away completely

Go Orthopedics Physical Therapy

stretchHaving your physical therapist and doctor in the same office offers a tremendous advantage.
Our fully-equipped Physical Therapy Clinic opened in May of 2007. Not only is this addition convenient for our patients, it allows Dr. Goradia and the physical therapist to easily communicate directly and more often concerning a patient's recovery, care and progress. This benefits patients because we can oversee progress, facilitating better and speedier recovery. Our PT services are not limited to athletes but include all patients who have suffered an orthopedic injury or had surgery requiring PT services.
Physical therapy treatment plans are designed to suit the goals and needs of each individual patient.Dr. Goradia refers patients to Physical Therapy (PT) if they have joint and bone injuries that require rehabilitation or post surgical recovery plans that require implementation by a physical therapist. The goal of therapy is to help reduce pain while improving joint mobility and strength, therefore restoring maximum function. Our PT Department is backed by a team of rehabilitation specialists including certified athletic trainers, aides and experienced assistants.
