Water Aerobics
Water Aerobics can Help Arthritis Sufferers find Pain Relief

Warning: be aware of a more Upbeat Mood

Ashley Blackman VATL, ATC

When you're joints are stiff and you're in pain, the last thing you want to do is exercise. But as strange as it may seem, arthritis sufferers can find relief through moderate to low impact exercise such as water aerobics or yoga. How? The cushioning effect of water exercises allows movement without discomfort, lessening the impact on joints. This prevents further damage to painful joints and helps keep them mobile while promoting circulation, strengthening joints, building muscle and enhancing cardiovascular fitness.

Most classes are taught in water where you can reach. But floatation devices are also available for non-swimmers if classes are taught in deeper water. Other than pain relief, side effects include an elevated mood and more restful sleep. Then there are the positive social aspects of group exercise. It simply makes exercise fun.*

As always, please consult with your physician before starting any new exercise program to see what works best for you.

Quick Tips for Enjoying the Pool and Avoiding Danger

Inner Tibe
- Make sure everyone knows how to swim, particularly if you have a backyard pool
- When entering water, it is a good idea to use a feet-first entry to get a better feel for how deep the water is as opposed to diving in right away
- Do not dive in shallow water, unfamiliar lakes or rivers or backyard pools. The upward slant of the deep end to the shallow end is shortened in a backyard pool, increasing the risk of a broken neck from diving accidents
-The sun is fiercest between the times of 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. Wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the risk of skin cancer and early wrinkles.

Sincerely,
work out
