ref2Preventing Common Spring Sports Injuries
by Vic Goradia, MD

Snow Skiing

Many injuries are caused by improper equipment, fatigue at the end of day and skiing beyond your abilities. It is important to have skis, bindings and boots fitted and adjusted by a qualified professional. The bindings in particular should release based on your height, weight and ski level. If improperly set, the bindings may not release and place you at risk for injury to your knee. This is one of the most commone causes for injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

As your muscles begin to fatigue, their ability to respond to the snow decreases. This also increases your risk of injury. As you recognize this fatigue it is important to ski on easier slopes or to "call it a day and head in."

Skiing beyond your abilities can often result in skiing out of control. This of course risks injury to yourself and others. Recognize your abilities and ski within them to maximize your enjoyment. Please visit  Skiing and Soccer Injury Prevention Handout
for recommended exercises.

Soccer
Spring is a great time to get outside and enjoy playing in adult and youth soccer leagues. If you've been indoors all winter without much exercise then you may be more prone to injury. It is important to spend some time stretching, strengthening and practicing basic agilities prior to playing. On cold days in the early spring it is important to have a 10 minute warm-up period of light jogging and stretching.

Baseball & Softball
In addition to general stretching and strengthening, these sports have higher risk of shoulder and elbow injuries. Your program should focus on shoulder flexibility as well as strengthening the rotator cuff and upper back muscles. When throwing, it is also important to recognize the role of your trunk and abdominal muscles. These areas help your generate force when throwing the ball. Every program for injury prevention should include core strengthening and flexibility.
